FusionFall

FusionFall was recently released by Cartoon Network. Basically, the CN characters are what makes this game playable, even for a little while.

I loved the anime, teenage versions of the PowerPuff girls. Player characters are also anime-influenced. Character creation offers a lot of options, not quite City Of Heroes level, but much more customizable than the average MUD. By doing this, FusionFall avoids the common MMORPG problem of having dozens of identical avatars running around, an annoyance I remember in EverQuest2 and sometimes in low-level WoW characters.

Annoyingly, though, even cute copyrighted characters can’t quite make up for the disaster that is playing this game. The system is so simplified, everything activatable is activatable with a click. So when you run the usual “get X and return to me” MMO-standard missions, you run to the red dot on your minimap (yes, that’s also been simplified) and then click on the bad guy to shoot or click on the good guy to talk, run back to the original questgiver, another red dot on the minimap, and then click on him.  Sometimes making a game too easy to market it to kids can completelybackfire.

Oh, also it’s a PC game that wants to be a platformer so lots of jumping and hopping up on things.

Overall: Would have made an awesome t-shirt, with cute Cartoon Network characters, but it’s kind of an annoying game. I hope the Cartoon Network IP can save it.
