Economy Woes
So, everyone seems to be talking about the economy. Everyone, it seems, is getting laid off, or having their hours cut. Freelancers like me are struggling for clients, although my plan to ride out the recession is to diversify my clients. If I have a lot of clients, even for small amounts of work, it won’t hurt too much if I lose one.
I’m not all that worried about the economy *touch wood* because I don’t have either crushing debt or investments to lose. Very quickly all the advice about buying a house disappeared, and my new-married friends with their new houses are worried. I’d like to own a house because a house has more character than an apartment, but I’ve been loath to buy property because I don’t know where I want to live and where I want to be tied down. And now that I know what those loans are made of…
My in-laws cannot understand why we want to change jobs all the time, why we’d want to take a series of short-term, interesting jobs instead of putting our heads down and working the same soul-sucking job for the next 30-something years. Even ignoring the soul-sucking side of things, I don’t have any confidence that I would be able to work there for 30 years, and I wouldn’t get laid off.
